Yesterday's result showed us how AUDIT as a subject is increasingly becoming a NIGHTMARE for both CA Inter and CA Final students. Many students who otherwise scored well in FR/AFM or Costing/FMSM found themselves stuck due to Audit; many just scored a 40 (possibly due to grace marks).
Here are some reasons for this trend:
1. Shift in ICAI's Questioning Style – There is a noticeable move away from direct, memory-based questions to ones that test application, professional judgment, and logical structuring of responses.
- Students should focus more and more on concept/application
2. Lengthy and English Heavy Papers – Questions are often long and worded in complex English, consuming precious reading time and confusing students.
- Make English reading a habit. Read Audit Modules & Notes as much as possible
3. Lack of Writing Practice – Unlike practical papers, where students practice problems daily, Audit is rarely practiced in written form. Most students “read” the subject instead of “writing” it - a fatal mistake in a theory-heavy paper.
- Answer at least 2 questions per day in written format.
4. Over-Reliance on Summary Notes – Students often gravitate to short notes and summary modules. If you study 100, you may retain 40; if you study only 40, you might retain almost nothing under pressure.
5. Audit is Under-Prioritised – Often termed as a ‘boring’ subject, it is pushed to the last minute, relying heavily on revision lectures or last-week plans
- Start in advance / Plan for 2 revisions
6. Lack of Conceptual Clarity – Many students focus on rote learning SA numbers or keywords without understanding how to apply them in case-based questions. This weak foundation cracks under the pressure of exam stress.
7. Neglect of Presentation & Language Skills – Audit answers require structured writing, professional tone, and specific terminology/key words.
- Identify keywords & highlight them in your answers
8. Poor Time Management in Exams – Students often run out of time due to lengthy reading or slow writing, leaving parts of the paper unanswered or written half-heartedly.
- Practising mock tests can help.
9. SA-Based Questions & Integration – SA-related content is now embedded within case studies. Unless one has deep familiarity with Standards on Auditing, it is difficult to spot what is being tested.
-A holistic approach is required in preparation.
10. Not completing 100% syllabus : Many times students fall for fast track or exam oriented classes without completing 100% of syllabus even once.
The blog discusses in detail how Audit has become one of the most feared and underperforming subjects in the CA curriculum, particularly for CA Inter and CA Final students. With increasing emphasis on conceptual clarity, writing practice, and time management, Audit is no longer a subject that can be passed through rote learning. ICAI’s shift towards case-based questions and SA-integrated scenarios demands a deep understanding and a structured approach to writing answers. The blog outlines 10 reasons why students struggle with Audit — ranging from neglect of syllabus coverage, poor language skills, and over-reliance on summary notes to lack of familiarity with Standards on Auditing (SAs). The content provides actionable tips like daily answer writing, reading modules regularly, highlighting keywords, and planning two full revisions to overcome Audit-related challenges. Ideal for CA students appearing in Nov'25 or May'26, this guide aims to help them avoid common pitfalls and score confidently in Audit.
