Brought down means bringing the closing balance of that ledger in the Previous FY to the current FY. if it has a debit balance (Assets and Losses) To b/d or has a credit balance (Equity and liability) By B/d. Carried down means the closing balance in the current FY is carried to Next FY if it is assets and losses, then By C/d, or if it is equity and liabilities, then To C/d.

B/d - means the opening balance - brought down - For A/cs with debit balances - To balance b/d - For A/cs with credit balances - By balance b/d C/d - means the closing balance - carried down - For A/cs with debit balances - By balance c/d - For A/cs with credit balances - To balance c/d

First, we should know identify if that A/c is a debit balance a/c or a credit balance a/c. In this case, the Plant & Machinery A/c is an Asset A/c. We have learnt that assets always show debit balance. So, for debit balance a/cs, Balance b/d will be on debit side ("To balance b/d") and Balance c/d will be on credit side ("By balance c/d").
