Jus in rem refers to a right that a person has over a thing, like property, that can be enforced against anyone. Jus in personam refers to a right that a person has against another person or entity, such as a contract or debt, and can only be enforced against that specific party.

"Jus in rem" is a right in respect of a thing. “jus in personam" is a right against or in respect of a person.

A right in rem is a right exercisable against the world at large, as contrasted from a right in personam which is an interest protected solely against specific individuals
