Let numbers be x& y x+y = 45 and square root of xy = 18 and then substitute value of y i.e. y=45-x in the second equation i.e. xy=18^2=324. Then u will get 36 & 9

The product of two numbers is 3200 and the quotient when the larger number is divided by the smaller is 2.The numbers are a) (16, 200) b) (160, 20) c) (60, 30) d) (80, 40) How to do without option verification
latest answer
When you solve these kind of problems by assuming variables as x & y, if you do not have two complete equations of x & y , you will get multiple answers . In this case if we assume all numbers are whole numbers and there are no decimals then xy = 3200 & x/y = 2; from equation x/y = 2 , x = 2y which can be substituted in equation 1 to get 2yy = 3200 and y = 40 => x = 80 . But there is no need to do all this when you already have options.

The sum of the digits of a two digit number is 10. If 18 be subtracted from it the digits in the resulting number will be equal. The number is a) 37 b) 73 c) 75 d) none of these numbers. How to do above sum without option verfication
latest answer
using options is simpler as it saves time and helps a student spend more time on some other questions. x + y = 10 x + 10y - 18=? In this there is no second equation so it cannot be solved using equations as x & y can have multiple answers
