What is "Alpha" in measurement of Systematic risk in portfolio management ? Please let me know what is the conceptual aspect for that..

Alpha is a measure that helps investors evaluate how well their investment is doing compared to what is expected based on the overall market. It is calculated by subtracting the expected return of a benchmark index from the actual return of the investment. If the Alpha is positive, it means the investment is doing better than expected, and if it is negative, it means the investment is doing worse than expected. Alpha is a measure of the systematic risk, which is the risk that affects all investments in the market. Let's say you have invested in a mutual fund and the benchmark index for the Indian stock market is the Nifty 50. The expected return of the Nifty 50 is 15%. At the end of the year, your mutual fund has returned 18%. The Alpha of your mutual fund would be calculated as follows: Alpha = 18% - 15% = 3% This means that your mutual fund has outperformed the benchmark by 3%. In other words, your mutual fund has returned 3% more than what was expected based on the performance of the Nifty 50. This positive Alpha indicates that the mutual fund has a higher return for the same level of systematic risk compared to the benchmark.

Is alpha and beta same in this concept? If not what is beta ?
Alpha is a measure of performance relative to a benchmark, while Beta is a measure of a stock's volatility relative to the market. Both Alpha and Beta are important metrics used in portfolio management and investment analysis. Let's say you have invested in a stock and the benchmark index for the Indian stock market is the Nifty 50. The expected return of the Nifty 50 is 15%. At the end of the year, your stock has returned 20%. The Alpha of your stock would be calculated as follows: Alpha = 20% - 15% = 5% This means that your stock has outperformed the benchmark by 5%. In other words, your stock has returned 5% more than what was expected based on the performance of the Nifty 50. This positive Alpha indicates that the stock has a higher return for the same level of systematic risk compared to the benchmark. Now, let's say the Beta of the stock is 1.5. This means that the stock is 50% more volatile than the market (represented by the Nifty 50). This means that if the market goes up by 1%, your stock is expected to go up by 1.5%, and if the market goes down by 1%, your stock is expected to go down by 1.5%. In this example, the Alpha and Beta of the stock indicate that the stock has outperformed the benchmark and is more volatile than the market. This information can be used by investors to make informed investment decisions.
